at MDC's Kendall and North Campuses.
Please note that these courses are open to MDC students, dual-enrollment high school students and adult learners.

Studio Jazz Ensemble

Course emphasis: Sight reading, ensemble playing, rhythmic accuracy, dynamics, intonation, phrasing, articulation,
jazz improvisation, musical and technical fundamentals, accurate and appropriate stylistic interpretation,
performances and fun through the joy of making music. Styles will include jazz, Latin jazz, fusion, smooth jazz,
rock, funk & World music.

Recruiting: The ensemble is looking for interested instrumentalists, vocalists and string players. The instrumentation will
include the following:
Alto Sax 1 - soprano saxophone, piccolo, flute and clarinet doubles preferred
Alto Sax 2 - flute and clarinet doubles preferred
Tenor Sax 1 - soprano sax, flute, alto flute and clarinet doubles preferred
Tenor Sax 2 - flute, alto flute and clarinet doubles preferred
Baritone Sax - flute, clarinet and bass clarinet doubles preferred
Bass Sax - flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and contra-bass clarinet doubles preferred

5 Trumpets - all need flugelhorns and mutes including straight, harmon, cup and plunger
4 French Horns
3 Tenor Trombones - all need mutes including straight, harmon, cup and plunger
1 Bass trombone - needs mutes including straight, harmon, cup and plunger
1 Tuba
8 Male vocalists
8 Female vocalists
12 Violins
4 Violas

2 Contrabass

2 Guitars - Electric and acoustic guitar ability preferred
3 Keyboards - excellent reading skills, outstanding technical facility and MIDI experience preferred. Keyboardists
will split time between piano, synthesizer and string synthesizer duties.
2 Bass - Ability to play electric and acoustic bass, strong sight reading skills and experience with a variety of
musical styles preferred
2 Drummers - excellent reading skills and experience with a wide variety of styles preferred
3 Latin percussionist - Percussionists will be expected to play congas, bongos, timbales, bata, vibraphone and a
variety of shakers and hand drums

Course emphasis: Ensemble performance, rhythmic accuracy, dynamics, intonation, phrasing, articulation, improvisation,
musical and technical fundamentals, accurate and appropriate stylistic interpretation, performances and fun through
the joy of making music. Styles will include Pop, rock, rhythm & blues, soul, dance, techno-pop, electronic music, salsa,
cumbia, merengue, bolero, ballenato, cha-cha, bossa nova, swing, jazz, Latin jazz, fusion, smooth jazz, funk, World music
and original material.

Recruiting: The ensemble is open to instrumentalists, vocalists and string players of all levels and experience. The instrumentation will include
the following:

Course: Improvisation MUT 2641
Days: Monday and Wednesday
Time: 5:00 PM - 6:15 PM
Location: Kendall campus
Room: M-107
Course emphasis: This course will explore the functional application of harmony in an improvised form. In visual, oral, aural and written form,
students will demonstrate the ability to identify, construct and perform chords, chord-scales, modes, intervals, patterns, triads,
a variety of harmonic structures, guide tones, appropriate voice leading, harmonic substitutions, common harmonic progressions, song form,
melodic and rhythmic development, and melodic and harmonic shapes. Students will demonstrate the ability to perform all mandated
materials in twelve keys. Students will also be required to transcribe three solos of their choosing and perform one of those transcriptions with rhythm section accompaniment.
Recruiting: Students interested in improving their improvisation skills should "be there or be second chair".
